No Mo Toro!

24 Jun

Plants & Animals started up our first campaign! Titled “No Mo Toro!”

Bluefin tuna are at risk of extinction. The amazing fish is prized for its flesh at sushi bars around the world. A single Bluefin can be sold for $100,000 or more in Japanese fish markets (Japan purchases 80% of the world’s Bluefin catch). The world’s Bluefin stocks are estimated to be 3% of what they were before industrial fishing practices became common 50 years ago. Some estimates say that at current fishing rates, the Bluefin will be extinct in 3-10 years.

Given this reality, you might think it would be illegal to serve Bluefin at a restaurant in the U.S. (as it is illegal to serve whale and dolphin meat). Unfortunately, we have found that several Denver sushi bars serve Bluefin Toro and Maguro, often whenever they can get their hands on it. We at Plants & Animals Denver see this as a ridiculous as serving Siberian Tiger burgers or Mountain Gorilla steaks.

Thus we are initiating Operation: No Mo Toro. To do our part to save the Bluefin, we will be operating an ongoing public campaign to get Denver sushi bars to stop serving the threatened species, and educate consumers about why this is important.

For more info about this campaign and what you can do visit our “No Mo Toro” page here on the website!

Chomp! Diner Night! June 2nd

25 May

Hello CHOMP friends!

We are happy to announce that the next CHOMP community dinner will be at its coolest venue yet: Cafe Europa!

Date: Wednesday June 2nd, 2010, 7pm

Location: Cafe Europa, 76 South Pennsylvania St, Denver

Cost: Suggested donation $5-10

We are super excited that Cafe Europa has agreed to host the 3rd ever CHOMP vegan dinner. If you’ve ever visited this humble coffee shop (on Penn between Ellsworth and Bayaud), you know why. Plenty of tables, great atmosphere, and really just the perfect fit for our community dinner. Our chefs have been plotting a very special theme this time around… Breakfast for Dinner! Expect to get a plate full of some of your favorite late-night diner food, except without all of the drawbacks of a visit to IHOP. We can’t wait to serve up some homemade vegan comfort food for you!

Donations are to help cover the cost of the food, so your generosity is appreciated. However, this is meant to be an opportunity to try some great vegan cooking. We want to share the food we love to eat with you, so don’t let empty pockets slow you down. Donate whatever you feel the meal is worth to you. No need to bring any food, just your appetite and maybe a friend or two. Also, it couldn’t hurt to save some room for a latte, chai, or espresso from our gracious hosts, Cafe Europa!

It is very helpful if you RSVP so we have an idea of how much food to make.

Can’t wait to see you June 2nd!

“Forks Over Knives” is a documentary about curing the most common threats to the health of Americans through a plant based diet. It looks to me looks like it will be incredibly informative and bring a lot of positive attention to veganism! especially the health aspect! Check out the trailer and i will keep updating when i get more info about screenings in denver!
